What We Do

What Communities Who Can – Do

We are an umbrella body for more than 80 community-led groups covering all of Kirklees. Traditionally these groups were called Tenant & Resident Associations (TRA) but nowadays they are often called Community Action Groups.

Our project workers, known as fieldworkers, each cover one of the Council’s districts and offer support to the groups as follows:

Start –up

Rescue – when things go wrong

More information on the groups and districts can be found in the Our Districts section of the website.

More information on the sorts of training available is on the Training section of the website.

Helping Communities to Help Themselves

We help to inform and involve

We bring people together in their own districts to network , consult, and information share. These panels are called Community Panels, and are held in each of our districts. Look under Our districts to find out more.

Groups who are full members of Communities Who Can have two Delegates who can vote and stand for election at our AGM. We bring Delegates together throughout the year to discuss key issues about the organisation or housing issues. These meetings will be posted on the Upcoming Events page. These meetings are open to non-Delegates.

We bring together residents and key services in two working groups:

Safer, Cleaner, Greener – all safe, clean and green issues affecting our estates and environments

Quality Homes – investment and repair issues affecting council homes

These meetings are open to all of our members.

Please find more information under Meeting minutes

Once a year in the August summer holidays we bring our groups, voluntary agencies and Council services together in a marquee setting in our event, Better Places To Live

You can find photographs from the last event under Recent Events

We also celebrate achievement once a year in our Awards Evening in which we invite the Mayor of Kirklees to present awards to groups and individuals . You can find photographs of the last Awards under Recent Events.

We help to keep you informed without leaving your armchair. We communicate in a number of different ways:

Our bi-monthly publication Home Truths

Our website

Our Facebook site

Our App for mobile phones

A regular update at the Tenant & Resident Committees run by KNH

Please see the Publications heading for more information, and links to our most recent Home Truths.

We help to shape and influence services

We run a tenant-led scrutiny panel to scrutinise services offered by KNH and Pinnacle within Kirklees. Recommendations are fed through to KNH Board, and we have a high success rate in getting changes to services .

We have a tenant complaints panel which is used to hear a KNH tenants’ complaint, once it has exhausted the internal complaints process.

We have run a successful mystery shopping pilot, checking out housing services. For more information, look up Scrutiny under our Get Involved heading of the website.

We help communities to come up with their own solutions to local problems around loneliness and isolation

In our new health and wellbeing project funded by Community Partnerships, we support groups to come up with their own local solutions

We know groups are best placed to give this sort of low-key help to their neighbours. There are lots of ways of helping. Here are just a few ideas:

Social outing friends – helping residents to take part in activities and trips

Shopping friends – providing essentials for the housebound

Gardening friends – helping to do gardens for those who cannot manage any more

Craft group – bringing people together with a creative theme
